SYNOPSIS/PLOT: Australia is the story of Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman), an English, aristocratic woman who leaves England to follow her husband to Australia. He is in Australia with the intention of selling his cattle station the size of Belgium. However, Lady Ashley believes he is having an affair and travels out there to confront him. The property is in the north of Australia, and she embarks on an African Queen type journey, accompanied by a rough, hewn cattle drover (Hugh Jackman). Ultimately, Lady Ashley finds herself inheriting the cattle station and, in order to save it, she and the drover must undertake an epic cattle drive to Darwin. In the course of that journey, she falls in love with the drover, and the Australian landscape, and realises that her life is not over, and there’s always a new life to be had. The title Australia is intended to sum up the story of her life - her journey, the landscape, and the people she meets - all of which transform her life forever.

PRO REVIEWS:
----------------------------------------
"A wildly ambitious, luridly indulgent spectacle of romance, action, melodrama and historic revisionism, Australia is windy, overblown, utterly preposterous and insanely entertaining." (Ann Hornaday: Washington Post)
----------------------------------------
"If looks were everything, director Baz Luhrmann's epic salute to his native land would be the movie of the year. But, crikey, a padded script bloated with subplots and shameless sentimentality can wear you down. (...) beautiful scenery and the best intentions can't save Australia from dissolving in goo. (...) Rating: ** (out of four)." (Peter Travers: Rolling Stone)
----------------------------------------
"Australia is not the masterpiece we were hoping for. (...) While it will be very popular with many people I think there's a slight air of disappointment after it all," (David Stratton: The Australian)
----------------------------------------
"Australia is not a bad film, but it is far from a great one. (...) The film is fine, and never boring but, boy, is it overlong. At a mammoth 165 minutes it feels too much like a work-in-progress. (...) There is a lot of narrative flab and longueurs in the first two hours and the film often has the pace of a steamroller with engine trouble." (Jim Schembri: Fairfax)
----------------------------------------
"Baz Luhrmann has pulled off an incredible film (...) A love letter to the Australian landscape and our history, 'Australia' has international blockbuster written all over it." (Claire Sutherland: Herald Sun)
